Gathered here are the Oppositelock posts that people have put a good deal of effort into writing over the weeked. Today it includes the resurgence of American car manufacturers, engineering/design stereotypes, autocrossing a 1969 Firebird and more.

As you may remember from my last post, I recently bought a 1987 BMW 535i. I'd been troubleshooting the exhaust in search of some rest for my ears, and I finally found the problem: one of the exhaust pipes had broken off at the exhaust manifold. This time, I'm continuing my quest for a fully functioning exhaust. So with a plan in my head, I headed out to the garage armed with a camera, a shred of hope, and the night stretching out before me.

Sometimes, tradition is great. I don’t think that the preservation of the aristocracy in Britain is a great example of tradition, but I do think that building the Mustang with a live rear axle is. Or Ferrari still building naturally aspirated V12s. Or my Saturday night spliff. There are traditions worth keeping, and traditions worth losing, because really, it’s time we moved along.

Once upon a time, American cars were more often than not considered to be at the bottom of their respective segments. And that "once upon a time" wasn't that long ago. Now, it seems, that American cars have come back, and come back with an absolute vengeance. These days, whenever I'm thinking about what I'd like my next car to be, regardless of the segment that I'm thinking about, an American car winds up coming out on top. Put simply, in nearly every category of car that you would care to think of (barring uber-luxury cars like Bentley and Rolls-Royce), there is an American offering that is as good or better than anything else in the segment.

It's no secret that I love cars. If it has a motor and you can operate it, then I want to have a turn behind the wheel (or yoke, or controls, or touch pad, or whatever is used to move and control the thing). While reading Oppo this morning I read a post from The One Electronic about wanting to see the coolest concept aircraft/spacecraft. This got me to thinking, what would the aircraft/spacecraft equivalent of some of my favorite cars be?

We all know there are telltale signs of where a car is from just by feel and mostly exterior design. Have you ever really wondered about that though? Is it conciously intentional during the design process? The car on the left is obviously Italian. We certainly know that, but most non car nuts would probably guess so, because it looks like beautiful longing woman in red lingerie lying on your bed. It just amazes me how you can look at something(more than just cars)and be like "oh, that's German."

Last night, as I was looking through various comments on various articles on Jalopnik or Oppo, I came across a reference to the Volkswagen Phaeton, and its being able to be had for “well under $10k”. I looked it up on eBay, and, sure enough, a model (and not a bad one, at that) had popped up for the bargain price of $5900. Henry's brother Ruben !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! as well.

Ok, so my last post on Cars and their Aircraft/Spacecraft equivalents went over rather well. So I figured I'd soldier on. Now lets look at the same vehicles with an insectoid field of view. I (and through transverse properties, you) love these cars, but do you love their insect counterparts?

I had been looking for this set of books for a while, found it earlier this year. As a millwright who went through the apprenticeship at Chrysler, as a driver/mechanic for General Dynamics(formerly Chrysler Defense) that gets to take an Abrams around the test track every now and then, as a fabricator who builds prototype military parts, and as an artist who enjoys repurposing metal….it’s cool to see how my worlds collided so many decades ago to win WWII.

This is my 1969 Pontiac Firebird, she is my baby. She's been in the family 37.5 years. She's big-ish, heavy, moved around by her original so-tired-I'm-suprised-it-isn't-dead-yet HO 350 , and that 350 puts its power to the rear wheels through (as the title implies) a 4-speed overdrive automatic out of a Grand National. Despite all these "flaws", as some people call them, I take my Firebird autocrossing. This year is my first autocross season, and this post is about my third autocross ever, it will make you laugh and cry and everything in between!

You read that right, contrary to what you thought you liked, we actually like having nannies like blind spot monitoring, and actually love electric power steering, and would take an automatic over a manual given the choice. Don't believe me, read on.
